The Ring Video Doorbell along with their version 2 and the Pro versions have broken into the market quite a bit these last couple years.  No doubt you’ve probably heard of them.  If you haven’t bought one yet, you may have a lot of questions and hesitations.

Don’t worry, I’ve had mine for a while now and have some knowledge to pass on to you so you can decide about whether or not to buy it.

Smart Home Tip: Motion Sensing Lights Only When It’s Dark

I’m taking a quick intermission from posting about Kodi (any good smart home’s entertainment system) to bring you a pretty cool smart home automation tip.

Besides security, one of the goals of home automation is to eliminate a lot of the manual work we do in our daily lives.  It should relieve much of our need to remember to do things like turning of lights when we leave a room or setting an alarm when we leave the house.

This smart home tip is pretty nice because it automates turning lights on and off using a motion sensor, but only when it’s dark enough in the room to need lights.  This tip helps save energy because the lights turn off automatically when there’s no motion for a while, and it doesn’t waste electricity running the lights during the day.

Ecovacs Deebot Robot Vacuum

One of the topics I write about on this blog is home automation.  While we typically think of smart home hubs like Samsung SmartThings and security cameras, we can’t forget about smart home appliances that save you time in your daily life.

A robot vacuum is one of those smart appliances every smart home should have.

See how one of Amazon’s more highly rated and least expensive robot vacuums, the Ecovacs Deebot M80 Pro, fared compared to the industry standard iRobot Roomba.

Hey Google, Turn On the Xbox – Google Home, IFTTT, Harmony Integration

Google Home Harmony IFTTT

In this tutorial, I’m going to tell you how to control a Logitech Harmony Home Hub to turn on your Xbox (or any other entertainment center activity) by simply speaking a command to Google Home.

After I got my Google Home, one of my goals was to integrate it with as much as I could.

I already figured out how to integrate it with the Samsung SmartThings hub.  That one was easy since Google officially supports Samsung SmartThings integration (the logo is even on the box).

However, integrating the Google Home with Logitech Harmony Home Hub was not quite as seamless (although still pretty easy).

Z-Wave Motor Control – Motorized Window and Skylight Openers

In most of the smart homes today, AZ actuators are used as home automation gadgets on windows to aid in their vertical and horizontal movement.

The Z-Wave motor control is a new gadget used in systems that are automatized in domestic applications such as motorized window openers. Z-Wave can be used as an interface to control the skylight and window opener systems. In using Z-Wave to control shade and blind motors, it can be used to activate shade motors using Radio Frequency for transmissions of a remote signal. Z-Wave can be used for different home purposes when it comes to mechanization at homes.
