Were you an early adopter of Kodi on Xbox One, and now it’s freezing, crashing, and having sound issues?  Here’s the fix to get you up and running again.

Kodi on Xbox One Became my Favorite

Back when Kodi 18 alpha was release on Xbox One, I tried it out and either it wasn’t ready or the add-ons I was using were not ready for it.

However, for the past few months, I’ve found Kodi on Xbox One to be working way better than my Windows home theater PC (which was starting to age and get really slow).  Kodi was working great on my Xbox, and I’m able to use my Logitech Harmony remote to control Kodi on the Xbox without the need to use an Xbox controller.

Then This Started Happening

Everything was going great until last week, Kodi on my Xbox One started having these issues…

  • Sound in Kodi not working
  • Randomly freezing and crashing of the Kodi app
  • Could not properly exit Kodi because it would always freeze upon exit and needed to be force closed
  • Could not quickly reopen Kodi with an error message from Xbox that says “Kodi is taking too long to start”

Then, I read this comment on one of my Facebook posts

Kodi on Xbox One Keeps Freezing

It wasn’t just me!!!  Other people are having the same issue!  So, I set out to solve the issue.

Research and Troubleshooting

First, I looked at my Kodi error log to see what errors might be happening behind the scenes.  I found these error messages which were the last messages to save to the log before Kodi crashed…

I tried some suggestions which said to go through lots of the settings pages and select “Restore to default settings”.  That didn’t help.

How to Fix Kodi on Xbox One Freezing, Crashing, and No Sound

Then, I found a suggestion to uninstall and reinstall Kodi on the Xbox One.  I didn’t really want to do that, but Kodi was unusable with its current issues, so I had nothing to lose.

So, I did it.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Kodi (currently version 18 alpha 3) from the Xbox app store.

Then I did all of my usual setup from my complete guide.  Luckily it only takes me 5-10 minutes and I’m up and running with all my Trakt favorites and all!

It worked!  I’ve been using it ever since and haven’t had any sound issues or freezing.  It even closes properly now without the need to force close it.

What Was the Cause of These Issues?

I don’t know for sure, but if I can speculate based off of the symptoms and the errors logs, I think that “day 1” early adopters of Kodi on Xbox One introduced an issue into the Kodi settings that has something to do with the audio drivers that caused a conflict with version 18 alpha 3.  Like I said earlier, when Kodi first came out on the Xbox One, it was very buggy and not ready for use, so it’s not too surprising that is corrupted something that would cause issues later.

But, the good news is that if you’re having these issues, an uninstall and reinstall is likely to fix the issues like it did with me.

Let me know in the comments down below if you have any questions.  Thanks!
