Gmail Team Launches “Inbox”, Google’s New Take on Email [Invites Giveaway]

Google just launched a new product called “Inbox by Gmail”.  It’s a completely redesigned email app (both mobile and web) to run alongside Gmail.

I’ve Got Inbox Invites to Give Away!

UPDATE 10/24: I just got my invite!  So according to Google, I will have invites available to give away after 2 days.  I’ll be choosing winners on Monday 10/27 end of day.

Request an invite by entering your Gmail address below.  I will give my invites to some of you who signup via email.

Increase your chances by following me and sharing my posts on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+.

Congratulations to the following winners!  Abhinav J, Diego P, Kathy F, John R.

But the contest is not over!  I should still be getting more invites.  You can still submit your Gmail address above, follow me, and continue to share my posts.  I will continue awarding invites to my favorite followers as they come in.

Here is an overview video of Google’s Inbox by Gmail:

A New Gmail: A Long Time Coming

We all knew something like this was bound to happen soon.  I’ve been saying for about a year now that Google has to be working on a big update to Gmail.  I remember the days when Gmail was cutting edge.  But then its popularity and user base grew dramatically, putting a heavier focus on using Gmail for businesses.  Since then, it has remained relatively stagnant with only minor updates here and there.

The only thing about this that I wasn’t expecting (but makes complete sense) is that Google decided to add an additional app to its product line instead of doing a major overhaul of Gmail.

The reason is that a big chunk of Gmail’s user base is made up of businesses, schools, and governments.  They usually don’t like big overhauls due to the disruption of standard operating procedures, training, and technical support.

So, Google launched a new app called “Inbox by Gmail” which accesses your same Gmail account, but with a completely new interface and added features.

Inbox by Gmail: Re-think How to Use Email

The Gmail team at Google has been working on Inbox for over 2 years.  During that time, they have spent a lot of time rethinking how people should use email and what email should do to help keep on top of things and get things done.

Inbox shows a lot of similarities to Google Now in the way it does processing in the back-end to bring important information to the front.

Both Inbox and Google Now are showing a great direction for the future of smart apps that use big data and intelligent programming to make our digital lives easier.

Inbox by Gmail Features

Inbox is Invite Only

Similar to many of Google’s big product launches (like Gmail, Google Voice, Google Wave, etc), Inbox is accessible by invite only.  You can ask for an invite from a friend that already has Inbox or request an invite from Google by emailing [email protected].

While you wait, you can still head on over to inbox.google.com to download the mobile app, which still won’t let you sign in until you have an invite.

It’s not a good idea to publish your email here. Enter it in the box at the top of this article to sign up via email. I’ll be picking from those who do the most social sharing, liking, following, +1’ing, etc.
