I love my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II! It’s an outstanding phone.
Being the geek that I am, I’m always checking up on the XDA Forums to see what new ROMs are available for it.
Within a few weeks of the phone releasing, I got Cyanogenmod 7.1 which is Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread. I installed the nightlies using Rom Manager about every other day to keep on top of the freshest ROM, until Cyanogenmod halted development on Gingerbread to focus on CM9 which is ICS (Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich). I’m really excited for that to come out any day now.
Besides CM7, there are several other ROMs available for this phone. I’ve noticed that “UnNamed” ROM seems to be quite popular in the community, though I haven’t tried it.
So what do you think? What ROM have you tried and would recommend? I would love to hear your comments.
Love the galnetMIUI rom. Google it and make sure to include the keyword at&t. It was hosted at xda and it can still be downloaded there however they closed the thread because it wasn’t one of their guys or something. This rom includes many ics features and has few bugs. One notable bug is you can’t scroll through pics in market without force close. If you go with this rom I would also recommend not getting the very latest update in the xda thread. I would recommend the version directly before the latest as the latest one posted there introduced more bugs than it’s worth. Overall though the rom is super fast, great on battery, and has many ics features. One of my favorite features is greatly improved GPS lock time. Less than half the time stock takes. Definitely worth a try
Also forgot to mention you will need to install a launcher from the market to make it work well. The default one kind of blows. Go launcher ex for free has been awesome for me
Thanks for the insights, Erik! I’ve looked at GalnetMIUI, but never tried it. Are you referring to the one that’s based on Android 4.0, but doesn’t have most ICS features or the one on Android 2.3 Gingerbread?
