Goodbye Google Glass

Goodbye Google Glass

Well, it had a good run.  Ok, who am I kidding.  I can’t believe it took Google this long to take Glass off of the market.

That’s right, today is the last day to buy Google Glass: Explorer Edition for $1500 on Google Play.  After today, it will no longer be for sale from Google.

My Experience Exploring Glass

I’ve shared my experience with Google Glass before.  It wasn’t very good.  I was one of those super-excited geeks that can’t wait to try it.  Finally, when I got to try it, I quickly realized why all the hype did not live up.  The features were cool, but having it on your face was not.  I think smart watches are the best application of such tech.  I returned Glass after a few weeks.  Goodbye, Google Glass.

Is There Any Future For Glass?

Finally, about 3 years after Google launched their Google Glass Explorer program, they are shutting it down.  However, Google is not clear about whether this is being shut down forever, or if they are going to come out with an improved version in the future.

It would be interesting to see what kind of improvements they would make in a version 2 of Glass.  But, to be honest, I doubt I would buy it.  What do you think?

Though I did like how Google did try the venture for the Glass project. It inspired others to start wearable techs to begin with. I think the best application after the glass is the Helmut HUD product I saw on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1217074232/smallest-flexible-motorcycle-head-up-display-with?ref=nav_search

What problem was it that Google glass was going to solve for me? [crickets].

So what problem will the Apple watch, or a Google watch solve for me? [crickets]

Yes there a great solutions for non-problems.

I agree with you to some degree regarding Google Glass. But it’s not really that it’s not solving a problem, but more that it doesn’t solve it very elegantly. The problems that all of these devices try to solve are…

1. Having to pull your huge phone out of your pocket hundreds of times per day to check the notifications when your phone makes a notification sound.
2. Neglecting notifications that were actually important just because you’re tired of pulling your phone out of your pocket so much.

My wife and I have no children, so we do not get so many notifications.

We do not drive so reaching for a phone is no problem.

I guess our lives are uncomplicated.
