Guest::I’ve been ending up at your blog quite often as I’ve been playing around with my new Kodi install on my Android. Add-ons, external players for casting, etc. Many topics I’ve looked at have brought me here, so thank you for all your help! And now- here’s one for you:
I’m trying to figure out how to cast a web stream (like SALTS or Genesis) to a DLNA device. I can do files (as long as they’re .mp4, at least), but streams elude me.
Some of the problems:
The casters don’t see the receiving device.
Reciever quality might not quite be there.
I think there’s file type issues: I think some devices can only work with certain file types, And I can’t tell what file type a stream is in advance before I load it, and it’s a pain to keep going through them to find one that might play.
I’ve tested a bunch of different situations/configurations. I’ll list my equipment first, and then some observations after that.
THE GOAL: To play a SALTS video from my android tablet or phone, through DLNA to my TV, either through the TV (best), or Xbox (2nd) or Chromecast (2nd).
Equipment:
Kodi Isengard 15.2 (on Motorola MAXX Android 4.4.4 phone AND Ellipses 7 tablet 4.4.2)
– Phone has 2.4 and 5GHz capability; Tablet can do 2.4 only.
– Kodi add-ons worked with: Mostly SALTS. I’ve added “save to favorites” ability, and also “play using” ability (f/Kinkead)
Casters: Tested mostly with LocalCast and Allcast. Also the Chromecast App. Have looked, unsuccessfully, at: Plex, ScreenStream (very weird), PlayTo Lite, and others.)
Receivers: Xbox One (PlayTo is set to ON, media app installed): Sony Bravia TV (2014) Smart w/dlna, and Chromecast (1st Generation)
Observations, in no particular order:
Casters don’t ‘see’ the Xbox for some reason. Chromecast app does see the xbox, but seems it can only cast it’s own in-app video stuff.
Casters do see the TV and the Chromecast (but not the xbox).
Apps that have built in casting (like youtube) DO see the xbox and can cast. (youtube is installed on xbox, of course.)
Casters seem to be able to cast .mp4 (only) from an on-device FILE (Directly, not through Kodi.)
ScreenStream is very strange (and at least a little dodgy). -Very- complicated setup (like setting up USB debugging mode in Developer Options).
SOMEHOW (and I’m not quite sure how) – I was able to get to see my Kodi TV show Favorites folder on my xbox, through Media Player. I got down to ‘episode’ level (Show-Season-Episode). But nothing was able to play.
Any help?
(I do have a laptop, PC/Win7 pro. But it’s in a different room and won’t work without an external monitor, so I’d like to keep that out of the loop if possible).
And thank you in advance for anyone who even takes the time to read this message- much less reply with some suggestions or help!
